The CONNECTION - Houston and Galveston in the 30s occurs in the Great Depression era. Bob Rowland, seventeen, is forced by circumstances of the times to make his way in the world. He gets a job as a belhop in the Whitestone Hotel in Houston, which is owned by a crime syndicate and is a cover for its high stakes poker games.
By using his head, he makes friend with Tony Peppo of Galveston, who along with his brother Santino own Peppo's Grotto in Houston. Peppo handwrites a note that is his pass to get into the casino despite his age. He learns all that he can about craps, enlists the services of a cabbie named Rocco, and then has phenominal luck in his first foray. Despite being in a high speed chase to exit Galveston with Rocco driving his '32 Ford Roaster at breakneck speeds, they escape and Bob wins Tony's respect by telling him all about the incident.
After sharing some of his winning with his estranged mother and Rocco, the next day he makes a business proposition to Tony, hoping ot run his leased poker game. Tony refuses, but becasue he thinks Bob has brains and imagination, e hires him as a "Landman" in his oil operations run from Houston.
He meets a young girl at the office of Tony's Oil Properties who though unassuming is the daughter of two equally unassuming but very rich parents. Love blossoms. Just befor ehis 18th birthday in October, he takes stock of what he has accomplished by using his wits and good judgment and finds that for now, at least, the world is his oyster.
Throuhout the 11,00 word short story, Bob Rowland, a fctional character, interweaves his way through historical events. Names of people and places have been changed, but they did exist in the 1930s.
