The first few months of 2011 brought the unknown sensation of hope to Jen Calloway, a rich young woman with a troubled past. After landing a job at one of the best newspapers in San Francisco, she has begun to believe that at last she has gotten her life on track. But when a phone call wakes her in the dead of night with her sister's screams ending in a dial tone, she is compelled to travel across the country in search of her. Following the only lead, she rents a car and drives through the night to a tiny town outside of Austin, where a murderer lies in wait.
In the town of Reston, Texas, Officer Jake Jamison is struggling to stop the recent infestation of rural Meth labs and is forced to split his interest between the law he's sworn to uphold and his only brother, Bobby, who has been caught up in a web of drugs and deceit. When Bobby and his girlfriend, Jenna, go missing, Jake is led to believe that they must have skipped town before the ink on their warrants had time to dry. But when Jenna's twin arrives and stumbles across her sister's brutalized remains at the base of a hill, his brother is named the prime suspect in the slaying. Unwilling to believe that his brother would resort to murder, but hindered by the Austin detectives who seem unwilling to consider the lack of evidence supporting their decisions, he is forced to confront the larger plot he's unwittingly wandered into the center of.
When the authorities pin her sister’s murder on a dead drug dealer, Jen is unable to sleep on the notion that a sadistic killer is still free somewhere, while Jenna rots in a lonely grave. Refusing to leave Texas without finding the truth, Jen falls into an unexpected romance with the young Officer Jamison, and together they search through a forest of red tape and lies to find that at the heart of the scandals they uncover, there’s a breed of killer that can hide in plain sight.
