Moses of Chorene, born around the fifth century of the common era, is chiefly known for this history of Armenia but also wrote hymns and poems. Moses of Chorene is considered the father of Armenian history, much as the Greek historian Herodotus is considered to be the father of history.
Moses of Chorene traveled to Alexandria, Egypt to better learn Greek to translate the Bible from Greek into Armenian. He returned to Armenia several years later, and was appointed a bishop. As a bishop, he was asked to write this history of Armenia by Prince Sahak Bagratuni, a work that remains profoundly influential today in both Armenian and early Christian history.
