The story of David and Goliath told first-hand by an Israelite soldier. This is the first story in a short stories collection titled "Epic".

We often treat the Bible as an outdated rulebook. The do's and don'ts of life. Mere instructions from which we can pick and choose to apply to our own lives. But God intended His word as something so much more than our limited view of it. He gave instructions for us to follow, but more importantly He gave examples of people whose lives we can learn from.

He didn't just give commandments; stories of men and women were recorded to connect His message. He didn’t simply just say, “don’t be afraid”; He wrote of individuals who overcame fear and how they did it. His word was designed so that we would connect with it, feel it, desire it. So that in our struggles and sufferings, trials and temptations, anxieties and anguish –that we wouldn’t feel alone. Through Him, others before have conquered what we endure now, and just like them, we too can overcome.

In a world where our desires are entertained constantly, the church seems old and boring. We lose interest, and slowly, individual by individual, attendance drops as fewer people come due to the wrong reason of expecting to be entertained. Prayer becomes empty words, church gatherings become obligations, and the greatest collection of stories in the history of mankind gathers dust; sometimes even forgotten when we need its truths the most. But God’s Word was spoken to every generation, every person, race, nationality, age, tribe and tongue, you and me.

Look through the eyes of the individuals who experienced what we now read. They breathed and bled, hungered and thirsted, doubted, questioned, and felt like we now feel. Make their strength your own. Learn from their stories to live better your own. To connect with God’s word and these people, you don’t need a new translation, just a different imagination.
