In 1907, born an American Indian, deep in the mountain forest, Two Rivers learns well the skills necessary to survive the rigors of life in his mountain wilderness home. At age eighteen, "Two Rivers," driven by his adventurous spirit, leaves the sanctuary of his birthplace in search of his murdered father's past.
Taught about the Chameleon Lizard's ability to blend with its environment for defense and survival as a young boy by his grandfather, Stone Heart, Two Rivers also has a great love for horses and other animal spirits, thus having fulfillment in his life.
Two Rivers found his deceased father's family shortly after he emerged from the mountain wilderness. Employing his animal instincts to soften his presence, he moved among the white people in the new and different society, and even though his native appearance made them cautious, his stange new ways brought them an unexpected change in their lives. Soon they came to understand him and love him, and learned that among his native people he is the "Messenger," the one who brings enlightenment, however agonizing in keeping with becoming a "Human Being," a spiritual goal to reach before an "Ephemeral Event."
