"In Flanders Fields" by John McCrae is supplemented by twenty-eight other poems, all short and lyrical and "An Essay in Character" by Sir Andrew Macphail.

The poems are fit to be their own retinue; any one of them perhaps could have headed a procession. They establish John McCrae's right to the authorship of "In Flanders Fields"; they prove that that poem was no accident, no gratuity of the indulgent fates. The poem itself sustains the test of re-perusal. It is not necessarily the work of a man of exceptional poetic power, rather, it is the work of a man of moderate poetic power placed in an exceptional moment.

The rarities of minor poets are sometimes as precious as the normalities of major ones. The serene warning, the gentle authority, the melancholy challenge, of "In Flanders Fields" is a case in point.

It is doubtful if anything in the realm of poetry made a greater appeal, either in England or in this country, than "In Flanders Fields." The beautiful lyrics were written by Lieut. Col. Dr. John McCrae, while the second battle of Ypres was in progress.

The author's body a few months later found a resting place in Flanders fields. No bit of verse were more quoted than the last stanza of the poem, which reads:

"Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from falling hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold It high.
If ye break faith with us who die.
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields."

The poem was particularly favored by the " Four Minute Men and Women" who spoke in the various patriotic drives for loans and other war activities. They had much to do with bringing the poem to the notice of the public.
