V Skyler has it all. Fantastic career, amazing husband, and an unbelievable view from her apartment on Central Park West. She's got her whole life wrapped up with a big silver bow, and is sure it will be no problem to tie a rattle to the end of it.
With only a month to go before the baby arrives, Jason and V trade in their one-step-from-the-penthouse condo for a mini-estate on the North Shore of Long Island. V is counting the days until the pregnancy is over and her life can return to normal. But no matter how hard she works her Blackberry, "normal" doesn't happen. She wants to schedule a Friday delivery, but her water breaks in the middle of the board room. When she gets to the hospital a resident cuts off her frantic e-mailing. And the head nurse won’t give her a private room for her 3:00am conference call with Asia.
V escapes from the maternity ward determined to get back to business, but Baby Madison has other plans. Staff conference calls are out of the question. She can’t even get through voice mail without splitting an eardrum or getting covered in goo, poo, or some other “oo” that has no place in the corporate world.
But even as she fights to get back to the world she knows, V falls deeper in love with Madison and swears that she is going to be exactly the kind of mother that Madison needs. And while she's at it, she's going to take care of Jason more, too.
For ten months V bounces between two lives like a super ball in a fun house. At home she faces mothers who can’t figure out why anyone would ever think about leaving their child for eighty hours a week. At work her colleagues whisper every time she leaves the office before 8:00, even if everyone knows it is for a business meeting. And to make things worse, Jason has a definite opinion as to how V should handle the tug of war that has become her life.
