Three Irish Plays

The wide scope and diversity of the Irish theater is represented by the three plays contained in this volume. Ireland's greatest poet, William Butler Yeats, wrote the romantic fantasy "The Land of Heart's Desire"; Douglas Hyde's folk-comedy, "The Twisting of the Rope" is the first modern play written and performed in Gaelic; and John Synge's "Riders to the Sea" is perhaps the purest example of modern tragedy.
