HAUNTED RIVER TALES- FIVE HUNDRED YEARS ON THE LOCHA HATCHEE
Florida’s history is wonderful, ancient, and violent. These tales are written from the perspective of four entities, or spirits, who have been chosen to protect one very sacred section of land from the ravages of time and outside influence. This is not your run of the mill collection of “ghost” stories. This is the story of South Florida itself.
The first tale is about Casitoa; a Jeaga Princess who lives in sixteenth century coastal Florida. She is one of the first to experience the vast, earth shaking changes brought on by European contact. She has certain “gifts“, one of which is the ability to communicate with her ancestors long since passed.
The second is Isa; a proud, fierce black Seminole warrior who is driven by his desire for power over his own destiny. He has many of the same skills as Casitoa, but is reluctant to acknowledge them. He fights in both of the famous Battles of the Locha- Hatchee that occur in eighteen thirty-eight in western Palm Beach County between Seminole warriors and U.S. soldiers and volunteers.
The third is Willie; a soldier in the United States army who comes too Florida to fight Indians. He soon realizes that there is more involved in fighting a senseless war with an elusive, cunning enemy than he originally thought. A curious man, he desecrates an Indian mound near Fort Pierce and suffers the consequences of angering the ancient spirits. He is also involved in the famous battles of the Locha-Hatchee, but from a different perspective.
The final entity is Levi, a South Florida citrus grove farmer who has a run-in with the infamous Ashley Gang: a group of bank robbers and bootleggers that terrorize South Florida in the mid nineteen-twenties. Like his ancestor before him, Levi also proves to be disrespectful to ancient artifacts and finds himself in divergence with primal spirits. His conflicts come to a head during the terrible hurricane of nineteen twenty-eight that claims over three thousand victims.
