The New God. Translated from the German of Richard Voss by Mary A. Robinson. "The New God" is a romance of the days of Tiberius, many of the characters being those whose names the Gospel narrative has already made familiar. The atmosphere of the story is full of the unrest that is supposed to have filled the world with the coming of Christ, and the introduction of Pilate, Mary Magdalene.and others lends it much vividness and dramatic strength.
This romance of the days also includes Jairus's daughter among the characters who, after being raised from the dead, has a vision in which she foretells the crucifixion. Tiberius sought the new God died, and Caligula became emperor. Mary Magdalene spurned his love and is crucified. The descriptions of Jerusalem and of the manners and customs of the times are done with German accuracy.
A most interesting read!
