Essays of a Shinshu priest
Immersed in the transformation of Buddhism into the West this collection of essays are snapshots of life along the way. For the author, becoming Buddhist, is an unfolding path of discovery. Pushing at the boundaries of tradition and interpretation. Uncovering in the simplest of daily activities the limitations of personal abilities and the hope of nembutsu.
Jodo Shinshu is a Buddhist tradition that began during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries in Japan.
Like other schools of Buddhism, Jodo Shinshu is also concerned with the resolution of the difficulties we experience. However a person of Shinshu recognizes the limitations of the unenlightened while at the same time assured that enlightenment moves the unenlightened to the resolution of difficulties. Recognizing his absolute inability to resolve difficulties, Shinran the founder of Jodo Shinshu, found hope and joy in the assurance of the promise of Amida to resolve the difficulties of all beings.
