Apology Against the Arians (Illustrated)

St. Athanasius was the Bishop of Alexandria and Confessor and Doctor of the Church. Athanasius earned the characteristic title of “Father of Orthodoxy.” His long episcopate lasted 45 years (c. 8 June 328 - 2 May 373), of which over 17 years were spent in five exiles ordered by four different Roman emperors. He is considered to be a renowned Christian theologian, a Church Father, the chief defender of Orthodoxy against Arianism, and a noted Egyptian leader of the fourth century.

In 346, following the death of Gregory, Constans used his influence to allow Athanasius to return to Alexandria after he was exiled. Athanasius' return was welcomed by the majority of the people of Egypt who had come to view him as a national hero. This was the start of a "golden decade" of peace and prosperity, during which time Athanasius assembled several documents relating to his exiles and returns from exile in the Apology Against the Arians.
