DON’T COUNT THE SEEMINGLY HELPLESS OUT. This story provides inspiration to those who are handicapped and disabled. A paraplegic man put in an impossible situation ends up doing the impossible. This is the premise of Elgin J. Dobbins’ new short story entitled “An Impossible Feat”. This story chronicles an event in Merrill Rivera’s life when he is put in a situation where the survival of he and his friends depends upon his personal will and toughness.
The storyline opens with Merrill preparing to go to work; he works for a lending institution. During the course of the day his metal will be tested far beyond what an ordinary man would be expected to survive. He will be placed in a situation where he will be the only one who can prevent a catastrophe that could claim the lives of him and his co-workers. The danger to himself and his co-workers cannot be emphasis enough. The resulting outcome will change him for the rest of his life.
The strange turn of events lets him know that he is not a restricted hulk of a human, but is a valued member of the human community. Initially he has some difficulty understand the situation he is put into and why bad things always seem to happen to him in light of the incapacitating injury he already suffers from. The answer comes to him in a most unusual way. A way that will allow him to use the skills that he has to intervene in a way that he never thought he could.
