Performance Highlights of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health 1995 - 1999

This report presents highlights of NIOSH progress and performance over the past five years. It is organized around the NIOSH Strategic Plan, which provides the framework for performance goals and indicators required by the Government Performance and Results Act of 1993 (GPRA). These goals encompass the functions deemed critical to the protection and promotion of worker health and safety: research; surveillance; prevention intervention; and information, training, and capacity to prevent occupational diseases and injuries. While GPRA requires annual reporting of performance, this report covers a five-year period. This longer time frame facilitates a more valid assessment of the results and impacts of investment in research activities, many of which take several years to complete. Annual reports of NIOSH performance are contained in the CDC Congressional Budget Justifications submitted to the Office of Management and Budget each year.

In creating NIOSH as the nation’s primary research agency for worker health and safety, Congress recognized that NIOSH must rely on others in the occupational safety and health community to have an impact on the overall level of hazards, injuries, and illnesses in the workplace. NIOSH has developed initiatives and programs to create and nurture partnerships with these other stakeholders in pursuit of this common mission. With efforts focused on its four strategic goals, NIOSH will continue to provide leadership in delivering on the nation’s promise of a safe and healthful workplace for all.
