When aspiring young actresses begin showing up murdered in New York, Charles Gaston Hayes, persuades his brother, Nick Sorrentino, to help decipher the few obscure clues in hopes of capturing a quietly taunting obsessive killer.

Another Side of Town is a murder mystery set in Manhattan in 1964 that could be subtitled “Who Is Nick Sorrentino?” - for it introduces Nick as the erstwhile psychiatrist turned “temporary” detective who has returned from Boston suffering self-doubt due to a broken marriage and life-altering misgivings about his profession. A native New Yorker, he comes home to find the city literally being demolished before his eyes.

His brother Charles is a flamboyant, cross-dressing, small-time actor who is mad about the theatre. Because of Charles, Nick halfheartedly agrees to help his childhood friend, Lieutenant Billy Kilkenny, who is over his head intellectually and politically with the sensational, headline-grabbing killings.

Nick meets Martina (Marti) Beltrane, daughter of a wealthy cattleman from Florida. Marti’s society aunt has given her rough-hewn good nature a few coats of sophisticated polish. She has come north in search of her missing sister, Zöe (also bitten by the Broadway bug), who at first is thought a possible victim of the serial murderer, but later in the reader’s mind becomes a suspect, or at least associated with the “suspects.” Eventually, the reader is also awakened to the possibility of Charles as the murderer.

Slow to act both in the criminal and the romantic realms, Nick slowly succumbs to the allure of the investigation and to Marti’s considerable charms.
A copy cat murderer spins the story in two directions at once. Using the tools he has learned in psychiatry and his highly developed, if understated, street sense, Nick, with considerable help from Marti, nails the case through perseverance and a twist of fate.

On the personal side, the romance of the two lead characters becomes stronger even as it is sorely tested by suspicions cast upon their respective siblings. Notions of right and wrong collide with family allegiances.

The close of the story finds Nick in his new digs on Riverside Drive with Marti, indicating the direction of their future.
