Set in suburban Boston, Walking Greenbush is a story of a grown man who, after fleeing the South Shore and living his entire adult life in California is compelled to visit the South Shore. There he recalls the ordinary and tender events of his young life and confronts the violent events and people he thought he left behind when he fled.
Marty Roberts, the protagonist leaves his Weymouth (his hometown). He serves a brief stint in the Navy, works as a photographer, and then settles into a job in California. But his deeply buried need to reconcile with his past surfaces and propels him to make a cross-country trip to Massachusetts. He plans a quick visit; a walk around his hometown and along the abandoned Greenbush railroad line. Marty believed he severed all his connections to Massachusetts, but while there, the past unexpectedly hits him with all of its joy, drama, pain, and angst.
Marty reconnects with a crotchety old man who was one of the few solid, steady influences in his early life. The old man joins Marty and the two walk Greenbush and through the external and internal geography of both their lives. Marty finally faces the demons that have chased him around the country; a murder, sexual abuse, and the impact on his life due to the death of his mother when he was young.
