We all know Amelia Earhart's brave attempt to fly around the world ended somewhere in the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean. Over the years there have been at least a dozen books on her and her achievements. There has been some wild and unfounded speculation on her ultimate fate and a group has even claimed to have found artifacts of her last flight. Conclusions have been drawn on circumstantial evidence but to date there is no conclusive proof that anything other than a navigational error cause her to miss the target and run out of gas.
The fact that no one attempted the feat for another 30 years after Amelia's death is a testimony to the dangers involved. But the world knew someday another women would make the flight and conquer the goal. What the world did not expect was two women trying for the goal at the same time.
