There are few sports that demand the physical and mental discipline that it takes to be an aerobatic pilot. That is probably why competitive aerobatics has become a popular sensation for pilot thrill seekers and spectators.
Performing at the competition level requires that the pilot have split second timing and precise speed and altitude control. The critical factors of wind and temperature must constantly be calculated and only the most advanced aircraft can execute the maneuvers. A wrong turn, a misjudged pullout or a roll in the wrong direction will not only cost the pilot points, but could cost them their lives.
Until 1972, men and women competed separately in aerobatic competition. For decades, women excelled in this precision sport with skill and artistry but none had captured the overall National Aerobatic Championship title, at least not until Patty Wagstaff streaked into the competition.
