This Halcyon Classics ebook is the 'manifesto' of early 20th century American conservationist and Progressive Gifford Pinchot. A friend and protege of Theodore Roosevelt, Pinchot as chief forester of the United States was instrumental in establishing forest preserves at a time when common wisdom advocated clearing forests for lumber and agriculture. Pinchot also defended the hard-won gains in the face of efforts by William Howard Taft and his interior secretary Richard Ballinger to roll back conservation efforts.
