Arimoto Akagi—born and raised in the U.S.—is seriously injured; sole survivor of an experimental Japanese submarine disastrously sunk during clandestine recons of Puget Sound before WWII. A marooned spy, his rescuer is grandson to the family that invited the Sakais to Seattle. Established and successful farmers, the Sakais host this castaway—his past unknown to them. Akagi falls for Mary Sakai; questioning fealty to a family and social structure he never embraced. U.S. authorities are piecing together a puzzle that puts them in dogged pursuit of the transformed imposter but Yamamoto's fleet attacks Pearl Harbor transforming everyone's world.
