John Burnet (1863-1928) was a Scottish classicist who made lasting contributions to the field of philosophical studies, primarily in Ancient Greek philosophy. In particular, it was Burnet who originally theorized that Plato’s Socratic dialogues, which cast Socrates as the central character, were reflections of Socrates’ views instead of Plato’s own. There is still debate over whether Plato has Socrates trumpet Plato’s views instead of his own, but Burnet believed that Plato’s late dialogues, few of which used Socrates, actually reflected his own philosophical viewpoints.
Burnet also maintained that Socrates was closely connected to the early Greek philosophical tradition, now generally known as Pre-Socratic philosophy; Burnet believed that Socrates had been in his youth the disciple of Archelaus, a member of the Anaxagorean tradition. This becomes clear in Burnet’s Early Greek Philosophy, still one of the defining works about pre-Socratic philosophy.
