Inspired by the trial, conviction and release of the West Memphis Three, Bill Marbry uses a ghost character to bring light to issues such as manipulation in the legal system and child abuse in his book, “Talkin’ White Trash”.
The story is told through the eyes of a redneck ghost named Carl Bender, who was murdered over a drug debt. When Carl was alive, he used, beat and stole from people without any guilt or worry for anyone else. Throughout the first half of the book, readers learn of Carl’s family history that includes a father who cheated everyone out of their last dime and murdered a couple of people along the way. The second half of the book focuses on the three years after his death when Carl’s ghost is placed in the middle of a murder investigation. His best friend is the primary suspect. Carl uses his new abilities as a ghost to help his friend.
Marbry intends for “Talkin’ White Trash” to show that early experiences in life can hold horrible consequences on a child’s future actions and collateral damage abounds. He also addresses how people of different sexual preferences are treated in the legal system and other areas of life. After the West Memphis Three case, and the murder of his own brother, he was inspired to drive his point home to parents through a novel.
About 18 years ago, three teenagers in West Memphis Arkansas were accused of murdering three young boys. Damien Nichols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Miskelley were tried and committed to prison because of manipulations by law enforcement and the court system states Marbry. He says the conviction was the result of false evidence and a Satanic Panic similar to that of the Salem Witch Trials. They were released when DNA evidence was brought forth to prove that they had not been at the scene of the crime. Johnny Depp, Wynona Ryder, Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam, Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks, rocker Patti Smith and Peter Jackson all rallied for their release.
