A news clipping about a grim murder in a Dayton motel shatters the lives of a father and son who share a prosperous New England law practice. The father suffers a fatal heart attack and the son, who had reluctantly chosen to forgo a career with a prestigious New York firm, succeeds him as the trustee of dark secrets.
Another brutal killing, this time in Philadelphia, then another in Atlanta, even more horrific, make it clear that these deaths are not linked by mere coincidence. Jim Kinkaid understands that he is inexorably linked to this campaign of terror, that his father's honor and his own life are threatened.
