150 years before the Civil War tore the United States apart over the divisive issue of slavery, an American Quaker preacher named John Woolman (October 19, 1720 – October 7, 1772) traveled throughout the British colonies advocating against slavery. Like other Quakers, Woolman also preached against economic injustice and oppression, and he was an early advocate against cruelty to animals.
Though Woolman died at the age of 52 of smallpox, he had written voluminously during his life, and much of it became The Journal of John Woolman, which the Quakers published posthumously in 1774. The Journal was combined with Ben Franklin’s autobiography and the writings of William Penn to create Harvard Classics Volume 1 nearly two centuries after Woolman’s birth.
