Upton Sinclair's The Jungle

THE JUNGLE is Upton Sinclair's muckraking epic story of life in the Chicago meatpacking plants. The novel's revelations are so shocking one cannot read them without being filled with horror. While Sinclair hoped that his readers would embrace socialism as cure for the conditions described in THE JUNGLE, the book in fact spurred Congress to pass the Pure Food and Drug Act, setting the stage for inspection of the nation's food supply.
