Dead Souls by Nicolai Gogol

In DEAD SOULS, a mysterious gentleman, Chichikov, comes to a small Russian town and begins buying "dead souls" from landowners, serfs who've died but are still taxed. In the end, Chichikov has a get-rich-quick scheme in mind, hoping to borrow against his "dead souls" while gaining the prestige and respect he desires.
