Hildebrand Anne Beauligh, the young '"Sherlock Holmes in knee pants," who is the hero of Edgar Jepson's The Admirable Tinker, is not entirely a fictitious person. He has an original in real life, the youthful son of the author, Selwyn Jepson, who already at the age of five has developed a fine resourcefulness and cleverness especially in getting the best of his parents. The escapades of his infant offspring gave Edgar Jepson the idea which expanded itself into The Admirable Tinker, and, in fact, young Selwyn was the direct inspiration of many of the stories. Edgar Jepson is a very fond parent, and it is because he thinks that the country is good for children that he lives in a remote London suburb instead of at the centre of the city itself, which personally he would much prefer. He has a disdain for the country, which he says is "very monotonous; nothing but grass, grass, grass; and trees, trees, trees."

The adventures of this wonderful youngster have a humor and a quality all their own. Tinker himself is surely the greatest boy hero in fiction since "Huckleberry Finn" and "Tom Sawyer." He plans his escapades with all modern improvements, and brings to his aid flying machines, automobiles, and anything else that lies at his hand.
He is the son of a baronet in reduced circumstances, and when his youthful Napoleonic brain plans a campaign it is not usually without some pecuniary advantage in view. Tinker furnishes himself and his father with pocket-money by returning kidnapped children to their parents, by rescuing millionaires' daughters from brigands, and by other methods similarly unique. Eventually he restores the family fortunes by providing his father with a rich wife. In fine, Tinker is as resourceful as Sherlock Holmes, as diplomatic as Machiavelli, a Chesterfield in deportment, but a true boy in spirit every moment.
