Ireland is an ancient land whose origins are lost in the mists of mythical prehistory. Fortunately much of this prehistory has been preserved by the seanchaithe or traditional story tellers who would relate the sagas of great warriors long past around turf fires at night. In time, these traditional stories were written down by scribes, but some what imperfectly. However, the closest any of these manuscripts come to a history is Lebor Gabála Érenn (The Book of Invasions), which relates the arrival of the Tuatha Dé Danann and their bitter victory in the Second Battle of Moytura.
Sadly, much has been left out of even the Lebor Gabála Érenn and it is only recently that elfin sources discovered and translated from the original Quenya by J. R. R. Tolkien have become available, although with very limited availability. A small part of this treasure trove of information relates to an elf named Ailbe, who with her father Calatar, escaped from Kiertotähti when it was destroyed by Moriheru, the Black Wizard. Here, on Earth, Ailbe and her father were deeply involved in the rise of the Tuatha Dé Danann in Érieann. And a part of that story is the saga of Dearbháil and Cassmail, their tragic love and how their true love overcame all.
With Dearbháil's Song, we are proud to add their love story to the tradition of Lebor Gabála Érenn and thus fill in some of the missing pieces as well as reveal the extent of elfin influences upon our Irish prehistory.
