In the Cinnabar Mines: A Visit to New Almaden 1865, Illustrated

Mining Cinnabar, Quicksilver, Mercury, a necessity for process of removing gold and silver from ore, started at New Almaden just in time for the gold production in California. The heavily contaminated site is now closed to all, but in 1865 it was in full production.
