This is the book in which the pregnant woman in her tiny slum apartment in New York doesn't feel that she can go out to stretch her legs during the day, because then strangers might see her pregnant body.
This was Glasgow's second novel! The story is about semi-Bohemian artists living in New York, and how romance interferes with one's ability to create art. Running through the novel there's some socialist/anarchist strains! As a reader of the times you will like getting a clearer window on the life at the turn of the last century.
There is extraordinary sincerity in parts of the book, especially that dealing with Mariana's early married life! The photographic directness with which those privations, the monotony, the dismal want of all that makes marriage and motherhood beautiful, and of all that Mariana's colour-loving nature craved, is pictured and are quite out of the common nature of writers of the day!
An Excerpt: "At the corner of Seventeenth Street, a girl in a last season's coat left the crowd and paused before a photographer's window. As she passed from shadow into light the play of her limbs was suggested by the close folds of her shabby skirt. She had the light and steadfast gait of one to whom exercise is as essential as food, and more easily attained.
A man coming from Union Square turned to look at her as she passed. "That girl is a danseuse," he said to his companion, "or she ought to be. She walks to music."
"Your induction is false," retorted the other. "She happens to be—"
And they passed on."
