When two lonely people meet, they confront discrimination, fall in love, and find a way to be together in the face of prejudices. Quietly passionate Faith Boone longs to become a teacher, but her father drags her to the backwoods of Humble Creek. Isolated, Faith immerses herself in novels, and clings to her fleeting dream.

Then the broodingly handsome, part Cherokee railroad surveyor Morgan Tremain shows up, and with kindness, change Faith's negative view of men. Morgan rolls quietly into Humble Creek, and upon meeting Faith, is taken with her striking eyes, and calm strength.

Through life has hardened him to the idea of love, he is emotionally drawn to the softhearted Faith. Both are aware of their deep attraction, but Morgan knows the world will not accept their being together. Finally, he takes a risk and come up with a plan that could bring them together or destroy them.
