Jane Eyre was written by Charlotte BrontÎ and published in 1847. The protagonist of the novel is Jane, a plain and poor young woman. The novel begins during Janeís childhood at Gateshead, where she lives with her abusive aunt and cousins.
Eventually, Jane moves from Gateshead to attend Lowood School for Girls. While there, Jane is accused of being a liar by clergyman Mr. Brocklehurst. She is eventually cleared of the accusation. Janeís time at Lowood, a charity school, is not easy. Life is hard, as the students are treated to cold rooms and poor nutrition. When Mr. Brocklehurstís poor treatment towards the school and pupils comes to light, the school is rebuilt and life becomes easier at Lowood.
This edition is annotated with a critical essay and biography about the life and times of the Bronte family.
