He looked around his classroom as students waited for the bell to ring and class to start. Light today... probably some truancy. Some kids are busy texting each other. Some of the girls are trying the restraint of his manhood with their fashion statements or rather, their lack of clothing. There were rules, but enforcement was rather lax.
This was California. Most of his students were Hispanic or Armenian. First generation citizens holding all the hopes and dreams of their parents on their shoulders. Are they citizens? He can't ask.
He does, however, remember.
He remembers his older brother. A handsome man with a bright future. A member of the National Guard. It was a way to get a GI Bill scholarship to help with his college education. America hadn't seen any kind of war zone action since Vietnam over fifteen years previous. Well, there was Panama and the extraction of Manuel Noriega and then Grenada (What was that all about again?) ...
