•Charles Grant Blairfindie Allen (February 24, 1848 – October 25, 1899) was a science writer, novelist, and a upholder of the theory of evolution. The most famous of "New Woman" novels of the 1890s is the novel The Woman Who Did. Herminia Barton enters a relationship outside of marriage with the lawyer Alan Merrick, and the consequences of that decision test her resolve to the very limit. Allen intended the book as a protest against the subjection of women, but feminists including Millicent Fawcett condemned both Allen and the novel.
