My name is Dr. Serena Joyce. I have a PhD in Human Sexuality and have a private practice in Los Angeles, California. I have been helping couples and singles deal with a wide range of relationship issues since the late-1970s.
In the '90s, I was a forty-something professional working in what was then (and still is) a highly unusual and specialized field that often skirts the perimeter of accepted fields of study. Being a woman in such a small field has always kept my services in high demand. By the late-'90s, I was fielding multiple offers from adult magazines asking me to do a "Dear Abbey" style column. The magazine industry was booming at the time and as it turned out, men were writing to adult publications looking for sexual advice.
I didn't want to do the typical, "sex sells" type of column that the higher profile magazines wanted from me. In fact, I was getting turned off to the whole idea until I was contacted by a magazine that features older women. Women over 40. My demographic.
This was something I could relate to. Something that to me would feel real. So I took the job and from 1998 to 2005 I had a very popular advice column. The magazine would literally receive letters from customers who had bought the magazine primarily to read my column.
The topics I was covering had apparently hit a nerve with the men who bought the magazine. I was giving men an opportunity to have a dialogue that they previously could not have with anyone else.
My goal was and my hope is that the insight I've shared helps make the world a better and sexier place.
