The trials that the children in The Maze Runner face aren't based on the author's personal experiences. However, author James Dashner has worked through his own set of trials. The characters in The Maze Runneralmost mirror Dashner's own never-say-quit attitude.
Dashner's well-regarded book series, The Thirteenth Reality, was an example of his personal trials. He submitted a book to a publisher in his early days as an author. The publisher liked his writing style, but wanted a different type of book. Dashner had one week to come up with a completely different proposal.
He had been thinking about another book idea, so he took the week to develop it. After his hard work, the publisher liked the idea. Dashner's first book was now in the works, and his success as an author was launched with The Thirteenth Reality. The three books in The Thirteenth Reality series include: The Journal of Curious Letters, The Hunt for Dark Infinity, and The Blade of Shattered Hope.
If you've ever wondered how rats in a maze feel, then you may be able to understand how James Dashner came up with the idea for The Maze Runner. Dashner says he had the idea for the book while lying in bed one night. His idea involved kids who were part of a futuristic experiment. He says the combination of thinking about rats in a maze and kids in an experiment led him to the idea of placing kids in a maze experiment in the book.
Dashner says he jumped out of bed and wrote the basic outline that night. He planned it as a trilogy from the start. As he began writing, he says music from the rock band Staind has influenced it.
Two years after its release, The Maze Runner still ranked 77th on Amazon.com's rankings for the best science fiction books for teens.

The Enjoyable Twists And Turns Of The Maze Runner
James Dashner's The Maze Runner is a novel built on a single idea carried out through two different fronts. The idea of persevering through all obstacles is the primary idea behind the book. Those obstacles force the characters to take many personal twists and turns to solve them … and not just because they're trapped in a maze!
The characters must persevere first against the Maze. They must work to solve the puzzle, trying to escape their prison. Throughout the book, the characters strive to inspire, saying they never can give up their struggles against the Maze.
Secondly, the characters must persevere against their own doubts. Once the main character, Thomas, arrives, the other characters aren't sure whether he should be trusted. He frightens them by some of the turns his decisions cause.
Then, in a final twist, the characters realize that Maze was not solvable, at least not in the way they expected. As a final act of perseverance, they must push aside that disappointing news. They must continue to push ahead to escape.
