A trip back to the same small Parish in the Pacific Northwest where we met Priest Father John Delaney, we find his happy go lucky tutor Father Patrick Bailey with a brewing crisis. Even though Father Bailey is still the jovial fun loving man, we are further exposed to his behaviors and his life. All of which include an active lust for women, a penchant for swearing, and a criminal past from which he is hiding.
In “Bailey’s Bane” Father Bailey slowly unravels what he remembers about his past that forced his decision to enter the Priesthood. While at the same time, Father Bailey’s patience and nerves are slowly unraveled by Katherine. Fortunately for Patrick, his best friend is a psychiatrist to whom he turns for support.
Dr. Peter Wright both a good friend and better psychiatrist suspects Katherine’s mental issues may not be genuine. His concern about Katherine however is redirected to Patrick whom he witnesses slowly unravel. To help his best friend, Dr. Wright digs into Patrick’s past and is shocked to surface Katherine’s instead. What is learned of their shared history is most astounding especially to Patrick Bailey. He is blindsided when he learns who Katherine is or, more importantly, who she is not.
Another Halloween, a cryptic letter from John Delaney, and Father Bailey on a rage induced mission brings this trip to an unexpected terminus. Here, Peter Wright returns from digging up Patrick’s past to find Patrick Bailey digging a grave.
