This special report presents findings based on data
submitted by 15 hospitals in the Seattle metropolitan
area for 2002.
Of the 719,000 visits to Seattle area emergency
departments (EDs) in 2002, 1.5 percent (11,003)
were related to drug abuse.
In 2002, the most common drugs involved in
these ED visits were alcohol in combination with
other drugs, cocaine, heroin, narcotic analgesics
(pain relievers), marijuana, and benzodiazepines.
Between 1995 and 2002, mentions of pain
relievers in drug abuse-related ED visits increased
85 percent in Seattle (from 51 to 95 per 100,000
Among the 21 DAWN areas, Seattle ranked in
the top 5 in ED visits involving alcohol in
combination with other drugs and heroin.
