This is a love story and the story of lives of the young, poor, rich and religious in a small village. A handsome young doctor who starts his practice in the village and quickly gets swept up in the lives of a wealthy landowner in the village, a young school teacher, a poor young school girl and a group of townspeople who seem to find great joy in keeping track of the actions of their neighbors.
This story opens with the scene of Dr. Holbrook, the sole Inspector of Common Schools in Devonshire, a quiet New England locale, having the loathsome responsibility to examine a candidate for schoolteacher. He asks his old friend, the recently-arrived Guy Remington to do it for him.
Guy is engaged to the sweet Lucy Atherstone, the fair English girl whom he had met in Europe. He is awaiting the time when she should be strong enough to bear transplanting to American soil and they can be married. His stepmother, Agnes, and stepsister, little Jessie, are staying with him at his nearby estate, called Aikenside.
Guy agrees to assess Maddy Clyde, a favorite in the village and desperately in need of the income. The pretty, rather young girl arrives in her Grandpa Markham's shabby equipage. Guy is strict with her, as instructed, and Maddy miserably fails. Then she faints...
