Great Women inAviation #3 - Dr. Sally Ride - First American Woman in Space

In 1978, Dr. Sally Ride was one of six women selected in an American team of 15 pilots, and 20 mission specialists for the upcoming shuttle and space station programs. The other women were Rhea Seddon, Kathryn Sullivan, Anna Fisher, Shannon Lucid and Judith Resnick. In 1979, NASA commissioned a huge mural showing a group of astronauts in the clouds headed by frequent space traveler John Young. Among them was a woman. In the original artist's sketch, made in the mid-seventies she was not in the picture. Attitudes were beginning to change.
