The Art of War is book that has been read and studied by many people for over two millenia. It is one of the books included in the Seven Military Classics of China, a compilation of military treatises complied in the 11th century. It has been widely read and studied in China ever since its initial publication. The book eventually spread to other countries and is now a worldwide classic. To note one example, The Art of War is one of the books included on the Marine Corps' Recommended Reading List.
The first western translation of The Art of War was published by a Jesuit named Joseph Amiot, who translated it to French in 1782. In 1905, British Captain E.F. Calthrop translated the book into English. Sinologist Lionel Giles published a new English translation in 1910 after criticizing the accuracy of Calthrop's translation. Another English translation was published by Marine Corps Brigadier General Samuel B. Griffith.
Starting around the late 20th century, people began studying The Art of War in contexts other than pure military strategy. The most notable example of this is the application of the book's principles to business. Some have even published special editions of the book intended specifically for business people including The Art of War for Executives, Sun Tzu and the Art of Business and Sun Tzu Strategies for Winning the Marketing War.

BOOK EXCERPT
From the Introduction by Adam Parker:
Why “The Art of War” Should Be On Everybody's Reading List
The Art of War is a classic in world literature. Although written thousands of years ago, multiple editions of the book still line the shelves of major bookstores today. While that fact alone may be enough to attract the curiosity of most readers, it is not the sole reason that I recommend this book to everyone. At first glance, The Art of War appears to be a book about military planning and strategy, and indeed it is. While warfare has evolved in many ways since the book's original publication date, it is still governed by the same universal principles. Because The Art of War addresses these universal principles of psychology, strategy and planning, it remains relevant.
However, the principles that Sun Tzu outlines in the book extend far beyond the battlefield into many areas of life. For the modern reader, the battlefield becomes a metaphor for a social situation, an athletic competition or the planning of a new business venture. The book can apply to numerous circumstances.
The Art of War is a book that unifies theory and practice. It is a piece of wisdom literature that is eminently practical. Sun Tzu advises the reader on the clearly defined objective of victory in battle and concisely analyzes all of the relevant aspects of the task. However, he expounds on the topic at such a fundamental level that his words echo through the generations and reach many aspects of our lives. ...To be continued!
