Over 100 years before Martin Luther defied the Catholic Church and prompted the Reformation, another European Christian made waves within the church, eventually resulting in military conflict and massive bloodshed. Jan Hus was a Czech priest who became famous for being the first true Church reformer, debating several Church doctrines such as the Eucharist, Church ecclesiology, and many more topics. Today he is viewed as a predecessor of the Lutherans, but the Church viewed him as a threat.

The Church eventually engaged Hus’ followers (known as Hussites) in several battles in the early 15th century, and Hess himself was burnt at the stake in 1415. But his followers fought on, in a series of battles known as the Hussite Wars, and Czechoslovakia’s inhabitants by and large remained Hussite afterward.

This edition of Hus’ The Church, published in 1411, is specially formatted with dozens of illustrations, including Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel, the paintings of Raphael, statues of Jesus and Mary, images of Saints, and more. It also includes a table of contents for easier navigation.
