In THE EDUCATION OF THE NEGRO PRIOR TO 1861, Woodson examines eduction (and lack thereof) for African-Americans prior to the Civil War. Woodson notes the systematic dismantling of educational opportunities for slaves in the South after the 1830s, offset somewhat with increasing opportunities in the Free States.
