HOMESTEAD ON THE HILLSIDE....IS A COLLECTION OF FOUR SHORT STORIES ON DIFFERENT HOMES AND THE LIVES AND LOVES OF THE PEOPLE IN THEM IN NEW ENGLAND IN THE MID TO LATE 1800'S!

• This volume includes a “Detailed Biography” of our author, Mary Jane Holmes.

The first story is about a scheming widow who marries another widower, and sets in place a series of events that cause tragedy for the family. This story also features the widow's daughter Lenora; a mischievous, trouble making girl who really has a good heart underneath; she is very entertaining and funny to read about.

All four stories have in them a "sickly" young woman, dying with what was probably tuberculosis. I am wondering if perhaps the author lost a sister of her own that way, and that is why it is a part of so many of her stories.

This book is about another way of life in a rural environment....the family is interesting and you will be sympathetic towards them all...it is a satisfyingly romantic and funny and touching novel....it will leave you with a good feeling about American families.
