Guidelines for Preventing the Transmission of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in Health-Care Facilities, 1994

This publication was a response to reported nosocomial outbreaks of tuberculosis (TB), including outbreaks of multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB), and the increasing incidence of TB in some geographic areas. The plan called for the update and revision of the guidelines for preventing nosocomial transmission of Mycobacterium tuberculosis published December 7, 1990.

The purpose of this document is to make recommendations for reducing the
risk for transmitting M. tuberculosis to HCWs, patients, volunteers, visitors,
and other persons in these settings. The information also may serve as a useful
resource for educating HCWs about TB.
