The Scrooge Diaries
Whereas all the other treatments of A Christmas Carol have simply re-hashed the forty-odd hours in Scrooge's life as narrated by Dickens, The Scrooge Diaries documents the entire life story, from birth to death, of the actual person on whom Dickens based his famous character.
People have always assumed, and quite reasonably, that the characters in A Christmas Carol, in particular those of Scrooge and Marley, were merely the product of Dickens' fecund imagination. In truth, the general belief was that even if there had been actual persons on whom Dickens based his characters, and even if such a firm had actually existed, all records of their existence would have been lost forever when Scrooge's house was demolished in 1875. And indeed, this is the complacent, almost smug, view that has prevailed for over a century and a half.
But we now know that shortly before the demolition of Scrooge's house certain trunks and boxes were removed from their musty cellar to an even mustier warehouse where they remained until their recent discovery.
Needless to say, this most astonishing literary find set the world of Dickensian studies topsy-turvy and forced a thorough re‰valuation of the previous skepticism; for among many papers of only marginal importance was the astonishing find of Scrooge's personal diaries and family memorabilia.
This book, then, presents a dispassionate chronicle of by-gone times from the perspective of the ordinary business man; and, in addition, an idiosyncratic chronicle of Scrooge's personal odyssey through the sea of nineteenth century quotidian life.
