A Life Less Normal is a story about overcoming drug addiction and escaping a haunting past. The protagonist is Tracy Douglas. Tracy is an African-American who has issues of finding herself, and finding a new life. Its emphasis is on her past struggle and how she maintains and makes changes for a new beginning of an enlightened life.

Tracy Douglas was on a path of destruction. Her memories of her childhood– that was suppressed for so many years– came out the night she had 'the dream'. She remembered the horrific events that took place: She was molested by her father and her baby brother was killed.

Dealing with her past, she also has to deal with the present. Tracy attended college for two-years at Alabama State University in Montgomery, Alabama. After leaving college and moving back home to New Orleans, she began working as a prostitute from being influenced by a room-mate named Latoya Wallace; Latoya showed her how to use what she got to get what she wants.

Although she was in the scene of sex and drugs, seeing her friend Pat die from a drug-overdose made her re-evaluate her life and make the necessary changes. With the help of her aunt Mary Dixon and new found love Tony Miller, she has a promise of a better life and a better tomorrow.
