Young Sean Casey, forced to immigrate from Ireland to New York as a result of the potato famine, survives a shipboard assassination attempt by a fellow passenger, only to be deserted by his uncle upon arrival.
On a a farm he acquires extensive knowledge of horses and guns. Criminal charges by the promiscuous daughter of the farm owner forces him to flee. Life in an indian village, marriage to the, Chiefs daughter and birth of his son add a joyful and woeful period to his life.

Sean and "JJ" join a wagon train bound for California accompanied by hardships. Sean's marriage to a young Mexican girl produces a son Patrick. A second marriage is interspersed with the struggles Sean and "JJ" face as they fight to build and save their ranch.
Heartache and final happiness follow Sean as he learns that life can be cruel and joyful in this fast-paced story, beginning in the year of 1846 to its conclusion in California in 1902.
