THE ESSENTIAL NOVELS OF GEORGE ELIOT includes the three novels generally considered to be Eliot's best: THE MILL ON THE FLOSS, SILAS MARNER, and MIDDLEMARCH.

THE MILL ON THE FLOSS details the lives of Tom and Maggie Tulliver, a brother and sister growing up on the fictional river Floss near the village of St. Oggs, after the Napoleonic Wars. Spanning the years from Tom and Maggie’s childhood up until their deaths, the book is loosely autobiographical and reflects the disgrace that the author herself faced while in a relationship with a married man.

Wrongly accused of theft and exiled by community of Lantern Yard, Silas Marner settles in the village of Raveloe, living as a recluse and caring only for work and money. Bitter and unhappy, Silas' circumstances change when an orphaned child, actually the unacknowledged child of Godfrey Cass, eldest son of the local squire, is left in his care.

MIDDLEMARCH presents the stories of a number of denizens of a small English town on the eve of the Reform Bill of 1832. The main characters, Dorothea Brooke and Tertius Lydgate, each long for exceptional lives but are powerfully constrained by their own unrealistic expectations as well as conservative society.
