Death Valley Madam

R. B. Griffith spent weeks with the living character who is the star of this book, also known as Vickie Star. She was real, is real. She grew up on a farm in Missouri, and left for San Francisco at the age of 16. Not long after her arrival in that city she turned to prostitution and later became a well-known although somewhat raucous madam. Chased from California after World War II, she moved to Nevada. She settled in Beatty, Nevada and after "My successful career there, I moved to Ash Meadows, California. She became the queen of prostitution in Ash Meadows, the heart of Death Valley. Vickie Star lived to be 84 and never considered her career as anything more than a job. She held it high in her mind, and many of her "lady" friends retired with her on a farm in northern California.
